Nairobi—A few years ago, the idea of President William Ruto arguing with his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, was inconceivable.

There were all indications that their friendship would last beyond their tenures.
The duo’s camaraderie was evident in all their undertakings, both in times of merry and hardship.
A tweet has been unearthed of Ruto consoling Gachagua when the latter was on the radar of the agencies in former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
In 2021, Gachagua had it rough at the hands of agencies like the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), whose officers routinely arrested him in connection to corruption.

At that time, Ruto was in solitary with Gachagua, whom he suggested was being persecuted for his political stand.
According to him, Gachagua, then serving as Mathira MP, was being troubled by the state on the basis of cooked up charges and that he would be vindicated in the fullness of time.
“My bro Gachagua, I know you are strong because we knew this politically instigated trumped up charges were coming. This persecution on account of our friendship & political beliefs will come to an end. They have connections, networks, pedigree and godfathers BUT we have GOD our Father,” read one of Ruto’s tweets.
