National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has reiterated Parliament’s commitment to providing legislative and budgetary support to independent institutions, including the newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking in his office during a courtesy call by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) led by Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, Wetang’ula emphasized the need to strengthen such institutions to enable them to discharge their mandates effectively.

“As Parliament, we will support NCIC and any other independent institutions in terms of budget allocation and strengthening the law, where necessary, to enable them to keep Kenya peaceful and united,” he said.

Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to back the IEBC as it prepares for the 2027 General Election, calling for collective support rather than premature criticism.

Dr. Kobia, on his part, thanked Parliament for its continued support but urged the Speaker to expedite the NCIC Amendment Bill 2014, which aims to enhance the NCIC Act of 2008.

Addressing the issue of frequent protests in the country, Wetang’ula called for a clear distinction between lawful demonstrations and riots. 

He cautioned politicians against issuing inciting statements that could undermine national cohesion and unity.

“We must live by the true spirit of the 2010 Constitution, which recognizes our diversity as a source of strength. Any attempt to intimidate or exclude people from any part of the country is criminal and must be dealt with,” he stated.

While acknowledging the constitutional right to protest, Wetang’ula encouraged well-organized demonstrations that do not infringe on the rights of others.
