United States backs Kenya’s regional peace efforts, Haiti mission

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Kenya’s leadership in regional peace efforts and its role in leading the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti.

U.S. Secretary of State Senator Marco Rubio praised Kenya’s diplomatic leadership, describing it as a “regional anchor state” and commended its peacekeeping efforts across Africa, including in Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“I expressed my sincere gratitude for Kenya’s leadership of the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti,” Rubio posted on X.

The remarks came during high-level talks between Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Rubio in Washington, D.C., where both sides discussed strengthening bilateral ties, regional stability and trade.

“We discussed regional peace and security,  expanded trade and investment and deepened diplomatic engagement,” said Mudavadi on Wednesday, May 7.

Mudavadi briefed Rubio on ongoing peace efforts in the DRC, led by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and supported by five regional Heads of State.

Rubio reaffirmed U.S. support for Kenya’s fight against terrorism, particularly al-Shabaab, saying, “Such cooperation makes both our countries safer.”

The talks also focused on expanding economic ties, with both parties agreeing to fast-track negotiations on the Kenya–U.S. Free Trade Agreement.

“Kenya and the United States continue to build on decades of shared values and strategic cooperation,” added Mudavadi.

Rubio expressed interest in visiting Kenya to further strengthen the partnership. Mudavadi was accompanied by Principal Secretary Dr. Korir Sing’oei, Amb. Monica Juma, Amb. David Kerich and Deputy Amb. Christopher Kirigua.

The visit, which follows an invitation from the U.S. administration, includes meetings with officials such as Congressman Brian Mast, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as U.S. investors and the International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC).
