Commuters using Super Metro Sacco buses within Nairobi and its metropolitan counties were left stranded for the better part of Tuesday morning.
The situation, witnessed across major stages in Nairobi and its environs, followed Super Metro’s announcement suspending services for three days.
According to the Sacco, the move is aimed at allowing the company to comply with National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulations.
“Following a hearing with the Transport Licensing Appeals Board today, the Board has directed Super Metro Limited to suspend operations for the next three days to finalise the remaining compliance measures,” Super Metro stated in a statement.
In recent weeks, Super Metro has faced sharp criticism over its operations — notably the death of a passenger along Thika Road, where a tout allegedly pushed them out of a moving vehicle for failing to pay a Sh30 fare.
Last month, NTSA suspended the Sacco, citing that 15 of its 523 vehicles had expired inspection certificates, while eight had expired Road Service Licences.
In addition, 294 vehicles were flagged for various speed limiter infractions, including expired certificates, lack of proper speed limiter records, and instances of vehicles exceeding the 80 km/h limit.
The Sacco, however, moved to court and obtained a temporary stay order barring NTSA from implementing the suspension.
It later reported achieving 90 per cent compliance with directives from both the NTSA and the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB).
However, a directive by the board has seen the matatu’s grounded again, with the transport service expressing commitment to respecting the board’s decision.
Passengers who frequently use the Sacco’s buses on the Kitengela, Utawala, Thika Road, Ngong, and Waiyaki Way–Kikuyu routes say they prefer the service due to its affordable, fixed fares, no excess carrying, and clean, comfortable buses.
‘’So you close on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and come back during Easter? How does that make sense?’’ MacMacwa_d3, an X user, questioned.
Adding that their suspension, is hugely an inconvenience.
‘’Sasa watu wa Westlands to Thika tunafaa tufanye? You should have taken the break over Easter,’’ suggested another user, Faith Ngatia.
