Senegal face Sudan in battle for top spot

Leaders Sudan and defending champions Senegal will battle on Tuesday for top spot in Group D at Amaan International Stadium in Zanzibar.

Both teams are tied on four points but Sudan have a superior goals aggregate to get perched at the top of the group table standings from two matches having floored Nigeria 4-0 after an earlier 1-1 draw with Congo Brazzaville.

On their part, Senegal opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Nigeria’s Super Eagles and 1-1 draw against Congo Brazzaville.

The Sudanese maverick striker Abdelrazig Taha Yagoub Omer who emerged Man-of-the-Match twice in matches against Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville will be looked up on to carry his top form against The Lions of Teranga.

If the match ends in a draw of less than two goals, then Congo Brazzaville could make it to the last eight if they beat Nigeria 3-0 to join Sudan in the quarter-finals on superior goals difference.

And so, Congo Brazzaville will be keen to beat the already eliminated Nigeria because they still have a mathematical chance of making it into the quarter-finals.

That match will also be played tonight at at Benjamin Mkapa International Stadium Dar Es Salaam Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, substitute striker Issa Boye will take the lead in Senegal’s last Pool D match against.

Officials confirmed injuries of two key strikers whom they were not willing to reveal their names who got injured in their last match against Congo Brazzaville that ended in a one all draw.

In one of their places, Issa Boye who came in for Yaya Al Mbaye in their match against the Rhumba Boys will be the main replacement in the Senegalese striking force.

“Our aim is to win and score goals. We are not going coming to defend. We have better replacements even after those injuries,” Senegalese head coach Soulemane Diallo told reporters today in a late afternoon press briefing at Amaan International Stadium Media Centre.

He said he’s fully aware these results will determine their stay in the month-long continental showpiece.

Diallo is equally aware of abilities and capabilities of the Sudanese in this epic match especially after they went on rampage to hammer Nigeria 4-0 over the weekend.
