Kenya’s leading telecommunications company, Safaricom, has upgraded its billing system to the latest release.

Safaricom confirmed to TUKO.co.ke that the upgrade boosts system reliability with zero-downtime rolling upgrades and faster recovery from disruptions, minimising any impact on customers.

“It is a converged billing system aimed at increasing efficiency in our service delivery to customers and decreased down time,” Safaricom stated.

How many users have subscribed to Safaricom’s billing system?

The company’s chief executive officer (CEO), Peter Ndegwa, revealed the telco had expanded its subscriber capacity by 40% to support 70 million users.

“I’m thrilled to announce a major milestone! After a 16-month journey, we’ve successfully upgraded @SafaricomPLC’s converged billing platform to the latest release, bringing important enhancements for our business and even greater value to our customers.

The new billing system reduces our bill run time by 65%, ensuring that customers receive accurate and timely billing information, which builds confidence in our service,” Ndegwa explained.

Ndegwa pointed out that the new enterprise billing and multi-tenancy features further strengthen Safaricom’s offerings for its enterprise customers.

Safaricom system maintenance affects customers

Safaricom’s latest upgrade affected the purchase of bundles and other services.

Other services that were interrupted included Okoa Jahazi services, all top-up airtime services, all subscription services, postpaid payments, Sambaza, Bonga, and SIM swaps.

The telco apologised to its clients for the inconveniences caused while working to enhance its services.

When did Safaricom suspend M-Pesa services?

Earlier, M-Pesa customers were unable to access services following a scheduled system maintenance.

Safaricom announced the undertaking on Tuesday, September 10 but other services, including calls, data and SMS, remained available.

The company said the frequent checkups of the M-Pesa system ensured customers got improved services and a better experience.
