Ruto, Raila attend funeral in Kilifi as protests gain shape

President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga are attending the funeral of Mzee Gideon Baya Mung’aro in Dabaso, Kilifi County, as protests unfold across multiple towns nationwide.

Mzee Mung’aro, a former senior chief, was the father of Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro.

The funeral coincides with the anniversary of last year’s Gen Z-led protests, during which at least 60 people were killed, many in incidents linked to police brutality.

Families of the victims, alongside civil society and concerned citizens, had planned to mark the day in remembrance.

A section of demonstrators are also calling for an end to the current administration, prompting heightened security alerts.

The funeral may provide a platform for both Ruto and Raila to respond to the growing unrest, which has drawn support from opposition leaders, church groups, and civil society organizations.

On Tuesday, Ruto urged demonstrators to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while pledging continued government support for police officers.

“To every police officer, I give you my assurance that the Government of Kenya will support you and stand by you as you keep our families and property safe,” he said.

Mzee Mung’aro died on June 15 and will be laid to rest today.

Earlier in the day, the President hosted Sultan Ali Allan, the envoy of Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan, at State House in Nairobi.
