Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to be discharged from Karen Hospital after being admitted because of sudden severe chest pain.

His illness was confirmed shortly by his lawyer Paul Muite after the Senate adjourned for lunch on Thursday, October 17, during his ongoing impeachment trial. According to his doctor, the illness may have been triggered by stress and age.
Kirinyaga woman representative, Njeri Maina, reported that Gachagua’s condition is improving. She noted that the deputy president is feeling very disheartened by recent events, as he worked tirelessly to secure his position in the government.

Gachagua had been battling impeachment over 11 charges, including corruption, gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, and threatening the president.

Despite his hospitalisation, the Senate proceeded with the impeachment motion, ultimately leading to his removal from office.
A gazette notice was later issued declaring his position vacant. Shortly after, President William Ruto nominated Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as the new deputy president, a move that received overwhelming support from members of the National Assembly.
