‘Resilient:’ How former President Uhuru remembers Chebukati

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined the nation in mourning the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair, Wafula Chebukati.

Condolence messages from leaders across the country have been pouring in following confirmation of Chebukati’s death on Friday morning.

In a post on his official X account, Kenyatta described Chebukati as a pivotal figure in shaping Kenya’s electoral landscape.

“Throughout his time in office, he played a pivotal role in shaping our nation’s electoral landscape, often navigating intricate challenges with remarkable resilience. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May they find strength and solace in cherished memories,” Kenyatta wrote.

Kenyatta played a significant role in Chebukati’s rise to the helm of the electoral body, appointing him as IEBC chair in January 2017—months before the country’s highly contested General Election.

Despite not ranking among the top three candidates in the recruitment process, Chebukati was selected due to concerns over regional balance within the commission.

In October 2016, Kenyatta appointed a nine-member selection panel, chaired by Bernadette Musundi, to oversee the recruitment of new IEBC commissioners. The panel shortlisted 11 candidates based on academic qualifications, professional experience, leadership, and integrity before forwarding their names to the president.

Among those nominated alongside Chebukati were Abdi Yakub Guliye, Henry Kizito Okola, Zephania Okeyo Aura, and Samuel Kimeu, none of whom secured the role.

Tukero Ole Kina was initially viewed as the most qualified candidate, but concerns over regional representation arose, as appointing both Chebukati and then-CEO Ezra Chiloba—both from Western Kenya—was seen as a potential imbalance.

However, Kenyatta defied expectations and still appointed Chebukati, who went on to serve a full six-year term.

His tenure was marked by controversy and allegations of external interference.
