Holders Kenya Pipeline yesterday thumped Tanzania Prisons Services in straight sets to chalk their second win in Group A at the Confederation of Africa Volleyball Zone V Club Championship at Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala, Uganda.
With the victory, Pipeline who are out to successfully defend their title sealed their place in the semi-finals. Though Oilers were the better side on paper and on court, they will have to work on minimising errors that saw them donate points to the Tanzanians who were blunt in attack.
Pipeline won the first set 25-14 before the Tanzanian warders stepped up to stage a relentless fight in the second set that saw them lead for the better part. The Oilers would recover to take it 25-20, they controlled the third set winning it 25-14.
In another Group A tie, Uganda league champions KCB-Nkumba edged out compatriots Ndejje University Elites in a tightly contested five-set thriller.
After taking the first set 25-23, Nkumba were overpowered by the students who took the second and third sets 25-20 and 25-15. They, however, recovered to win the fourth set 25-22 before snatching the victory 15-10. Pipeline top the pool with six points one more that second placed Nkumba.
At Nyayo, former Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Men’s National League champions the General Service Unit (GSU) yesterday beat relegation stuck Mt Kenya Base Yetu in straight sets to stretch their winning streak to eight matches.
The victory saw GSU who last won the league title in 2022 maintain their unbeaten run. They are the only side yet to lose in the 2024-2025 season that is now in its fourth leg.
GSU made light work of Mt Kenya taking the first set 25-13 before easing to victory with an identical score of 25-14 in the second and third sets. On Thursday, GSU had beaten Trailblazers Volleyball Club 3-0 (25-22, 35-33, 25-19 to register their seventh win of the season.
Trailblazers bounced back from the defeat to GSU to beat Equity Bank 3-2 (25-27, 25-15, 14-25, 25-17, 15-8) in a nerve-wrecking five-set thriller. They put up a spirited fight to come from a set down twice to outwitting the bankers in the decisive fifth set.
Reigning champions Kenya Prisons dismissed Administration Police of Kenya in sets of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-14 to register their 10th win of the season.
Kenya Prisons will today play Kenya Forest Services today.
