Part of JKIA grassland on fire


A wildfire has erupted at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, consuming part of its grassland. 

The fire which started at around 7.30pm, burnt part of the airport towards 75 Airport North Road near Tajmall area. 

In a statement on X, Kenya Red Cross stated it has deployed emergency and disaster response to the scene to extinguish the fire and to avert the looming danger at the international airport. 

“Emergency response teams are on-site battling a grassland fire inside JKIA, along Airport North Road, Nairobi County” the agency said on X.

“Efforts are underway to contain the blaze and prevent further spread,” the statement adds. 

According to Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) official the fire was consuming the grass at the airport, however, airport operations are still underway. 

“Planes are landing and taking off. There is no cause of alarm. The fire is only gutting the grass,” said Grace Adhiambo of KAA. 

By the time of going to the press, flames of fire, The Standard established, was spreading towards the airport’s runway. 

Authorities are yet to comment on the fire, and its cause remains unknown.
