A strong field of 240 players will be flexing their muscles for top honours at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
This will be in this year’s ongoing countrywide NCBA Golf Series Qualifiers, where the players will all be vying for coveted qualification slots to the grand finale scheduled for November at the Muthaiga Golf Club.
Nyali Golf Club captain Omar Lewa said on Wednesday that the much-anticipated tournament will be more than a game and a total tee-off to greatness.
“We are expecting more than 240 golfers and are looking at making it both competitive and fun. We are also recommending that golfers observe both golf rules and etiquette around searching for lost balls, including giving way to other flights when it’s necessary. We have also set great surprises on offer and an excellent social meet on hole 19,” said Lewa.
The day that promises to be an exciting and competitive season for golfers is expected to see home club’s Tony Minos and Petronillah Kalee coming to the tournament with their heads up, seeking a back-to-back victory.
This is after their team pair victory last Saturday, where they carded 38 points to grab the Moyne Trophy, the top prize awarded in a mixed foursome golf tournament at the club.
Mintos and Kale, who will this time play separately in the Men’s and Lady categories, respectively, said: “We are in excellent form and looking forward to clinching the top spot in the leaderboard. The course is in pristine shape, and throughout the week, we have been working extra hard on our swings and putting in readiness for this Saturday. It’s our time shine.”
The club also boasts several other skilled players who might pull a surprise in the 18-hole tournament, namely Andrew Miheso, Eliud Bett, Muzahim Taib, Dan Mugambi, Edwin Kiptoo, Willy Sang, Swaleh Omar, Gurbux Singh and the host captain, Omar Lewa.
The ladies’ team, to be led by the club chairman, Jayne Githere and lady captain, Hilda Mugure has other top players like Christine Ockotch, Florence Karimi, Mary Kandu, Terry Odoo, Navinder Kaur, Nancy Gathunga, Diana Nthiwa and Alice Wahome (Mother of Champions).
It has also attracted other Coast players from the nearby Sea-Link Mombasa Course, Diani’s Diamond Leisure Golf Resort, Kilifi’s Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort, Malindi Golf Club, and staff and guests of the sponsor with valid handicaps.
