The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned the recent loss of lives, destruction of property, and rising incidents of violence witnessed during the nationwide demonstrations held on 25th June and 7th July 2025.

In a statement, NCIC Chair Dr Samuel Kobia said: “Many young Kenyans feel excluded, unheard, and increasingly disillusioned. Their frustration stems from a combination of factors: high unemployment, economic hardship, lack of trust in institutions, limited opportunities, and a perceived failure of leadership to address their needs and aspirations.”

“These are not isolated sentiments; they are widespread and valid, and they must be urgently acknowledged and addressed.”

To that effect, the Commission has urged the government to engage the youth in a national dialogue, rather than continuing with physical confrontation.

NCIC also called for restraint, respect for the rule of law, and an end to the use of force by security officers.

“While we recognise the constitutional right of every Kenyan to peaceful protest, we call for restraint, responsibility, and respect for the rule of law. The destruction of business premises, attacks on public infrastructure, and the targeting of police officers are deeply regrettable and must stop.”

“Equally, we condemn the use of excessive force by some members of the security services. All actors—whether state or non-state—must uphold the right to life, dignity, and peaceful assembly always,” the statement added.

The Commission emphasized that Kenya is a democratic society, and no grievance, however genuine, should result in the loss of life or the destruction of livelihoods that citizens have worked hard to build.

Kobia’s remarks come a day after properties worth millions were destroyed in various parts of the country, at least 10 were killed and 27 others injured during the Saba Saba protests.
