Social media users have reacted differently following the recent statement by the Nairobi Baptist Church announcing severing ties with Rev. Munengi Mulandi, who had served as its Senior Pastor. 

The Church, through its Council of Elders, revealed that Mulandi stepped down on June 1, 2025, amid allegations of gross misconduct.

In a statement released on August 3, the church leadership said it had reviewed the allegations against the clergyman and found his actions to be incompatible with the institution and the responsibilities of ordained pastoral ministry.

The statement further declared that Mulandi’s ordination had been revoked, adding, “As a church, we sadly can no longer affirm that he is qualified to be a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” they stated.

While the church did not publicly disclose specific details of the misconduct, social media has been awash with damning accusations, including allegations of sexual abuse involving minors. 

The announcement has sparked widespread reactions online, with users expressing a mix of outrage, disappointment, and praise for the church’s public handling of the matter.

“‘We sadly can no longer affirm that he is qualified,’ so he was serving all this time unqualified? What happened to discernment?” wrote user @BobbyVj on X.

“It’s not an easy thing to do. This sort of action and accountability needs to be mirrored by other institutions in Kenya,” Media producer Toni Kamau commended the church’s move.

Others voiced skepticism and concern over systemic issues within church leadership structures. 

“This is why my kids will only attend sermons and leave. Taking up responsibilities in church often leads to exploitation and abuse,” said user @Missy_k32.
