MPs vacate Parliament as protests rock Nairobi

Members of Parliament have been forced to leave the parliamentary precincts in haste amid escalating protests in Nairobi.

In video footage seen by The Standard, lawmakers were seen driving out one after another, shortly after prematurely ending their morning session.

An insider confirmed the exit followed an advisory to vacate the premises as demonstrations intensified within the Central Business District.

The session was adjourned at around 11:45 am, well ahead of the usual 1:00 pm break, after Speaker Moses Wetang’ula cited a lack of quorum.

Six motions and four bills scheduled for debate were put on hold.

The early departure appeared aimed at avoiding a repeat of last year’s June 25 incident, when protesters breached Parliament shortly after the passage of the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
