Members of Parliament have unanimously approved the appointment of a chairperson and members to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The seven names will now be forwarded to President William Ruto for gazettement.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced the approval on Thursday after the House voted as a Committee of Whole.

Before the vote, MPs debated the credibility of the nominees, with many urging the SRC to execute its mandate without overstepping into the roles of other commissions.

Minority Leader Junet Mohammed criticised the outgoing SRC commissioners, led by Lyn Mengich, for allegedly interfering with the work of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).

“SRC thinks we [MPs] are a bunch of jokers. They assume we are just enjoying security, air-conditioned offices, and a good time. I challenge them to address wage bill disparities in the public service,” said Junet.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma echoed similar concerns, warning the SRC against repeating past mistakes.

“When we approve them, they come back hitting us hard. I’m not sure if the commission is cursed. Parliament has empowered them to harmonise salaries and review remuneration. Let them avoid the missteps of their predecessors,” Kaluma stated.

Other leaders including Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed Chimba urged the SRC to address salary disparities across all public sectors, arguing that neglecting certain groups had strained relations between legislators and the public sector.

“I urge the SRC, under Sammy Chepkwony, to address salary inequalities. Our offices are demanding, with people seeking assistance daily for travel, medical bills, and more,” she said.

She also supported North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood’s proposal to provide remuneration for village elders, recognising their critical role at the grassroots level.

President Ruto is expected to gazette the new commissioners, who include Sammy Chepkwony as chairperson and members: Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Martin Kizito, Mohamed Abdi, Dr. Gilda Odeya, Jane Njage, Leonid Ashindu, and Geoffrey Omondi.
