Migori – Police have launched investigations following the mysterious death of a trainee Catholic nun in Migori county.
The nun, identified as Yvonne Jiranga, went missing from Rongo Catholic Church on Thursday, October 24, 2024, before she was found dead.

Confirming the incident, Rongo sub-county police commander Salim Fundi said the body of the 23-year-old nun was found inside a sewer pit within the Rongo Parish Convent on Sunday, October 27.
“We got a report of a missing person and was on search mission before her body was found within the church compound by a fellow nun in a septic pit,” Fundi said.

The case is currently placed as a drowning case as investigations are underway to probe into the death of the nun since there were no signs of torture or external injuries.

The body was moved to Rosewood Hospital mortuary pending autopsy to determine the main cause of her death.
The police boss cautioned the general public to ensure all septic pits are always closed to avoid such incidents.
Homa Bay diocese vicar general Gabriel Atieno revealed that Yvonne’s body was discovered by a fellow who was on the way to the farm.
“After our efforts to find Yvonne bore no fruits, we filled a missing persons report only for her body to be found floating by a nun on her way to the farm on Sunday evening,” Gabriel said.

The church also cited that a probe is on to establish what might happened before her untimely demise.
“We are committed to working with the authorities to find answers. This is a painful blow not only to her family but to the entire church. The entire parish is shaken by this tragic loss,” he added.
The deceased was described as an active and outspoken hardworking nun and is said to have served in Rongo parish for three years.
