Ledama Olekina Suggests CS Wandayi Should Continue Serving as Ugunja MP over Lack of IEBC

  • Narok senator Ledama Olekina said MPs appointed to the Cabinet should continue representing their constituents until an election is held
  • According to Olekina, the absence of a functional Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was making some areas remain without representatives
  • He gave an example of Ugunja constituency, which Opiyo Wandayi used to represent before he was appointed the Energy Cabinet Secretary

Nairobi Narok senator Ledama Olekina has spoken about the negative effects of the country lacking a functional Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a tweet on Monday, October 28, Olekina suggested that Members of Parliament (MPs) appointed to the Cabinet should be allowed to continue discharging their legislative duties.

For instance, Olekina said Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi should continue discharging his former duties as the MP for the Ugunja constituency.

According to the Narok senator, lawmakers appointed to the Cabinet should be allowed to continue representing their constituents until an election is held.

However, Olekina argued that the affected lawmakers should only be entitled to one salary.

“Since we don’t have an IEBC in place, those nominated to serve cabinet from parliament should technically be allowed to continue representing their constituents until an election is held. So Opiyo Wandayi the people of Ugunja, Siaya County expect you to represent them in parliament, not as a minority leader but as MP. Only one salary,” Olekina said.
