Former Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa were among opposition and civic leaders who joined hundreds of Kenyans’ interdenominational prayer service held Sunday afternoon at the All Saints’ Cathedral.

The solemn service which is in honour of young Kenyans killed during last year’s anti-Finance Bill protests was themed “Lest We Forget – June 25.”

The event, which began at 3pm, is convened by faith-based organizations including the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), and the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum (KCPF). The service featured scripture readings, moving tributes, hymns, and moments of silence in honour of the protest victims.

The prayer gathering comes just days ahead of nationwide demonstrations planned for June 25, marking one year since police opened fire on demonstrators who had stormed Parliament to protest the 2024/25 Finance Bill. The bill, which was later withdrawn, sparked widespread outrage and led to youth-led protests across the country, many ending in violent confrontations with police.

The service comes at a time with fresh memories following the recent death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody under suspicious circumstances—reviving public anger and calls for accountability.
