The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) will hold a vigil in memory of Albert Ojwang, the 31-year-old teacher who died in police custody.

The candlelight vigil, originally scheduled for 4.00pm on Friday, will start at 3.00pm at KUPPET headquarters in Nairobi and will be observed simultaneously at all county offices.

Condemning the death, KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori said the incident echoes a complete corruption within the police service

“Ojwang did not deserve to lose his life. If he had committed a crime, as alleged, the coordination by officers from Taita Taveta, Homa Bay, and Nandi counties suggests that the killing was sanctioned at the highest level of the police service,” he said.

In his home county of Homa Bay, a remembrance ceremony will take place at his family home in Kokwanyo, Rachuonyo East Sub-county.

Protests are also taking place in Mawego, Homa Bay, over his [Ojwang’s] death, with demonstrators demanding justice.

Ojwang’s death has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability, with investigations underway into the circumstances surrounding his death.
