“We went to the Murang’a mortuary and identified her body a week after her disappearance,” Lydia, an aunt of the deceased, said.
Investigations commenced immediately as the authorities began piecing together the Form One girl’s last moments alive.
This was when it emerged that after she was sent home for fees, Irene and five other schoolmates decided to pass by River Sagana for a fun swimming session before proceeding home.
However, Irene disappeared in the raging waters, but the girls did not report to the police or tell her family, who had spent an agonising week looking for her.

“We went, and they opened up about how they went to River Sagana, but our daughter disappeared during the excursion,” Lydia stated, adding that the five girls’ stories did not add up.
DCI officers accompanied the family to the school to interrogate the five students.
The students went to River Sagana and unearthed Irene’s clothes, which they buried after she died in the river.
“It appears they buried her clothes after she disappeared in the water. When we went with the investigators, they showed us the spot where they buried the clothes, and they dug them up. The clothes are currently with the DCI,” the aunt said.
The family is now filled with sorrow and unanswered questions, wondering why the students failed to disclose what happened and only waited after her body was recovered.
“We hope the authorities will give us answers,” she added.
