Months after the community rallied to raise materials to complete the airstrip, frustration over the unfinished project has boiled over.

During the Mashujaa Day celebrations, men and women played at the dusty site, using sports as a platform to raise awareness about the abandoned project.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Daktari Kelvin Ufa, one of the area residents, expressed deep disappointment over the stalled project.

“Inauma sana kuona mkandarasi amepita na KSh 50 million ya Kerenga. Serikali itusaidie kukamata huyo mkandarasi,” said Ufa.

Caren Chelangat echoed these sentiments, adding that they were disappointed the government released the money but it “flew away.”

The airstrip, which was meant to boost the region’s connectivity and economic development, has instead become a symbol of stalled progress.

The once-promising project now sits abandoned, dusty in dry weather and dangerously slippery when it rains.

Even the windsock, an essential part of the airstrip, has deteriorated.

“Tunaomba Rais atusaidie; hebu oneni ata windsock imeraruka,” Vicky, another resident, pleaded, urging President William Ruto to intervene in the situation.

In the face of this setback, the youth of Kericho have vowed to continue playing football matches inside the airport every month until their demands are met.

For them, the games are more than just entertainment; they represent a call for accountability and action.
