It all began in 2008 when the man processed papers for the doting mother and her baby to relocate to the US as his spouse.
When she landed at Detroit Airport, her expectations were dashed when the man who came to pick them up seemed aloof, a stark contrast to the one she’d been chatting with.
She got even more confused when they got into the vehicle and her husband did not utter a word until they got home.
She knew trouble was ahead when she was ushered into the house, which was in a mess, with newspapers strewn all over.
Things worsened when she learned that her cousin had spread malicious rumours to her husband’s family.
According to her, the relative claimed that she, her father, and her brother had used witchcraft to blind the man into helping them relocate to the US.
This claim led her husband to subject her to bizarre restrictions and behaviour that left her feeling alienated and afraid.

In the meantime, they resorted to sleeping on clothes on the floor near the door, making do in conditions far from the life she had envisioned.
Her husband’s actions grew more troubling by the day.
When he was not working, he would spend the day in silence, sitting in the living room, watching TV, and sleeping.
He also withheld food, forcing her to rely on whatever money she had brought with her to buy essentials.
Her concerns grew even more serious as the couple neared the three-month marriage deadline required by US immigration.
