Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were to be buried on May 9

Slain Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were will be laid to rest on May 9, 2025, at his home in Homa-Bay, the planning committee has announced.

The Committee, chaired by Homa-Bay town Peter Kaluma, has, however, said the postmortem exercise that was slated for May 2 was postponed after police sought more time to complete the investigations.

“At the moment, we are just tying up loose ends. Our plan is to lay Were to rest on 9th May, 2025, but the body will be transported a day before to give the last opportunity to interact with the people.”

The team has decided, subject to the availability of necessary facilities and resources, that airlift his body to Kabunde airstrip in Homa Bay where he will be received by the people.

The MP said they are still considering the pathways that will give the fallen lawmaker the maximum interaction with the people

“On Wednesday, we have a requiem mass in Nairobi after the postmortem, and already as per tradition, his wives have gone home to signal to the community that he has died.”

Kaluma, said another team that he is leading in Nairobi, among them Governor Gladys Wanga, will be heading to the village on Saturday to oversee the preparations, adding that many people are expected to attend the burial.

Similarly, Kaluma also responded to reports that some people in Were’s constituency had said that the MP’s shooting was a relief, mostly to those he had crossed paths with.

“Our mandate is to ensure that he is given the most dignified rest that meets his status as the vice chairperson of cohesion of national equality empowerment committee and underscores that he was a second-term Member of parliament,” he stated.

Adding that, “Looking at the constituency, people are rarely elected twice, but you will expect divided opinion. Any person who stands for something must have people on opposite sides, and they are welcome, but in our culture, it is a taboo to talk ill of someone who has rested.”
