Speaking during a press conference in Eldoret on Monday, October 21, Omar made it clear that the party now officially recognises Kithure Kindiki as the second-in-command, replacing Gachagua.

The East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) legislator explained that, with Gachagua no longer serving as DP, he needed to vacate his role as deputy leader of UDA.

According to Omar, the party’s structure is closely tied to the constitution, which links the DP’s role to that of deputy leader of the ruling party.

“The spirit of our Constitution is that the person serving as the Deputy President should also serve as the Deputy Leader of the party. Therefore, if they are not the Deputy President, they will have to step aside and allow someone else to serve as the Deputy Leader of the party.

Why UDA Supported Gachagua’s Ouster

Omar went on to explain the reasons behind UDA’s support for Gachagua’s impeachment, stating that his actions had hindered President William Ruto’s ability to effectively lead the country.

He accused Gachagua of fostering division by promoting tribalism and grouping Kenyans based on “shareholder” status, which had made it difficult for Ruto to deliver on his promises.

“Tribalism on top of tribalism, putting people into groups, and speaking about shares and traps had now left the President without the opportunity and space to work,” Omar said.

The UDA secretary general stated that with Gachagua out of the picture, Ruto would now be able to lead a more inclusive government and fulfil the pledges he made during his campaign.
