Rooney Onyango has signed a two-year contract with Norwegian club Sogndal Football.
Known for his strong performances as a right back, the 23-year-old joins Sogndal after a successful agreement was reached with Gor Mahia.
Sogndal announced the news through a statement that highlighted Onyango’s impressive trial with the team earlier this year.
“Sogndal Fotball and Gor Mahia FC have agreed on a transfer for defender Ronney Onyango Otieno, born August 8, 2001! The agreement extends through the 2027 season,” the club confirmed.
During his trial period in January and February, Onyango showcased his skills and eared praise from the coaching staff.
He participated in several friendly matches, sitting on the bench against Lyn and starting games against Hødd and Stabæk. The club noted his contributions during training and matches, further solidifying their decision to sign him.
Onyango expressed his enthusiasm for the move, describing his experience at Sogndal as “love at first sight.”
“It was great to come to Sogndal for a trial. I felt at home from the first second, and everyone at the club was fantastic towards me. Teammates, coaching staff, and everyone around were very friendly and helpful.”
“It’s a big deal to sign a contract, and I’m very happy. I really wanted to come to Sogndal after the trial, and now I just have to keep working to get better. I’m looking forward to getting started and achieving things together with the team,” he said, eager to begin his new journey.
Before his move to Norway, Onyango joined Gor Mahia in 2023 from Muhoroni Youth, contributing to the team’s triumph in the FKF Premier League. He has also made a name for himself on the international stage, debuting for the national team, the Harambee Stars, in a match against Russia in 2022. Additionally, he turned down a transfer to Tanzanian club Singida FC, choosing to remain focused on his potential move to Sogndal.
As Onyango embarks on this new chapter in Norway, fans will be eager to see how he adapts to European football and contributes to Sogndal’s ambitions in the upcoming season.
