As Harambee Stars prepare to make their debut in the African Nations Championship (Chan), all eyes will be on a handful of standout players who are expected to carry Kenya’s hopes in the continental showpiece.

Kenya has been drawn in a tough Group A alongside football giants DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia. All their matches will be played at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in front of passionate home fans.

The tournament, which begins on August 2, will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Stars begin their campaign on August 3 against DR Congo, followed by clashes with Angola, Morocco, and Zambia. With strong opponents ahead, several Kenyan players are expected to play key roles in the team’s quest for glory.

Austin Odhiambo: The Creative Spark

Gor Mahia’s attacking midfielder Austin Odhiambo will be Kenya’s main source of creativity. Odhiambo, the 2024 FKF Premier League MVP, has been influential for Gor in recent years with vital goals and assists.

Despite the pressure of playing at home, Odhiambo remains calm.

“Pressure? What pressure? Playing at Gor Mahia, a club with millions of fans demanding results, is always a pressure cooker,” Odhiambo said. “I am used to pressure and for me, the target is to score goals and help Kenya win, especially since we are hosts.”

Alphonce Omija: The Young Wall

Defender Alphonce Omija, who made his debut for the national team during last year’s World Cup qualifiers, will be key at the back. The 22-year-old is confident the team is ready.

“The mood in camp is calm. We are focused on improving every day and I believe we will play better during our debut at Chan,” Omija said.

Mohammed Bajaber: Rising Star from Kenya Police

Kenya Police striker Mohammed Bajaber has been training individually due to a knock, but coach Benni McCarthy confirmed he is still part of his plans.

“Bajaber is very ready to be integrated into the team,” McCarthy said. “We don’t want to rush him back, but he’s one of those players that gives everything.”

Austin Odongo: Shabana’s New Gem

Teenage forward Austin Odongo is thrilled to be in the squad. “It’s a dream come true for me. I want to work hard, learn from the senior players, and give my best,” Odongo said.

Masoud Juma: The Experienced Finisher

Late call-up Masoud Juma brings valuable experience. “Masoud knows how to handle big games,” McCarthy noted. “His experience will help guide the younger players.”
