Giant workers union suspends general secretary

The Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers (KUCFAW) has suspended Boniface Kavuvi from his position as General Secretary.

In a statement, the union said the resolution was arrived after the National Executive Committee (NEC) met last Thursday.

In his place, Andrew Kinyua M’mukiri has been gazetted by the Registrar of Trade Unions as the Acting General Secretary of the union.

He will henceforth perform all functions and duties associated with the office of the General Secretary.

Prior to this appointment, Kinyua served as the first Deputy General Secretary of the union.

“The KUCFAW wishes to inform the public, members, and social partners of recent changes in the union’s leadership,” the KUCFAW statement said.

“Following a duly convened meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on May 29, a resolution was passed to suspend Boniface Kavuvi from his position as General Secretary.”

According to the union, the decision was made after the NEC found Kavuvi to have violated the Union Constitution and the Labour Relations Act.

Pursuant to this resolution, the union also said the changes in leadership have been formally effected and registered by the Office of the Registrar of Trade Unions.

KUCFAW represents workers in the commercial, food, and allied sectors, including those in retail, food processing, and logistics and also advocates for rights of workers, including fair wages, safe workplaces, and the right to organize.

The union seeks to improve working conditions, empower women, and create safe workplaces in various sectors of the economy including commerce and private security, in Kenya, Ghana, and Mozambique..
