“Kenyans have boldly told us to form a party that will form an inclusive government for the people and by the people. We finally have a political party that belongs to all of us, where everyone will be treated equally,” said former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as he unveiled the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) on Thursday, May 15.

In an anticipated political move, Gachagua presented DCP as a home for every Kenyan, resonating with their needs for equality, accountability, and citizen-led governance.

Speaking in Lavington during the unveiling, Gachagua said DCP was a response to persistent calls from Kenyans who felt unheard and sidelined.

“DCP is not just another political outfit; it is a movement built from the voices of ordinary citizens, not political elites.”

With the slogan ‘Skiza Wakenya’, the party’s colours, green, brown, and black, and its logo, a hand touching an ear, symbolise “listening to the ground.”

According to the former DP, his political message revolves around listening to the people, whom he says no longer subscribe to the current administration’s mode of governance.

“Following the urgent need for social change and economic transformation of our nation, I bring forth my response to the call by millions of Kenyans who have called on us to rise to the occasion for a voice of reason and a listening ear, a right they have been denied for long.”

“Dear Kenyans, I have spent six months in my Wamunyoro residence listening to Kenyans who voluntarily called me in the village. I have engaged with Kenyans on national platforms, religious leaders, opposition leaders, Kenyans living abroad, students, as well as youth on X and TikTok. And what Kenyans have boldly told us is that their inspiration and hope are under siege,” he added.

So far, Gachagua says that the party has received thousands of aspirant applications, urging prompt membership registration.  DCP will also not endorse favored candidates, but instead, empower Kenyans to select representatives who resonate with them.

His party has garnered support from figures formerly within the Kenya Kwanza camp and the opposition.

Key officials include Cleophas Malala as Interim Deputy Party Leader, David Mingati as Strategy Chairperson (deputized by Peter Mwathi), Hesbon Obanga as Party Secretary-General, and Cate Waruguru as National Women Leader. 

Hannah Mutua, Mithika Linturi, and Maina Kamanda will serve as DCP’s Treasurer, National Organising Secretary, and Council of Eminent Persons Chair, respectively.

The party’s official launch will take place on June 4.
