Gachagua Accuses Judge in Impeachment Case of Being Close to Amason Kingi: “Attended His Wedding”

Nairobi – Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his worries that Judge Anthony Mrima, who is one of the judges handling his impeachment cases, might not be impartial.

While defending the application seeking the recusal of the three-judge bench from cases, Gachagua’s lawyers accused Justice Mrima of being a close friend of Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

Advocate Kibe Mungai painted a picture of the alleged unfairness against Justice Mrima based on his alleged relationship with the Senate speaker.

According to Mungai, the judge and Kingi have a close relationship, to the point that the Senate speaker attended Mrima’s wedding and took photos together.

“Justice Mrima is closely associated with Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and he attended his wedding and it was posted on social media. We feel justice will not be done,” Mungai disclosed.

According to Mungai, the relationship between the judge and the speaker was so close that Justice Mrima needed to have disclosed it at the beginning of the hearing.

“The judge is guilty of material non-disclosure as the same ought to have been disclosed so that parties can make up their mind on the issue. We are of the view that it would not be proper for you to proceed with this matter,” the advocate added.
