Four officers accused in Baby Pendo case released on bond

The High Court has released four police officers accused in the murder of Baby Pendo and 39 other victims during the 2017 post election violence on a personal bond of Sh200,000 each.

Justice Margaret Muigai granted bond to officers John Chego Masha, Linah Kogey, Cyprine Tobi Wankio, and James Rono with strict conditions that they must not interfere with witnesses or tamper with evidence adding that failure to comply will lead to cancellation of their bond.

The four officers have denied all the nine charges including murder, rape, and torture.

On Monday, April 5, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, dropped murder charges against eight senior police officers linked to the killings citing lack of evidence.

The officers had unsuccessfully attempted to  halt their prosecution on grounds that the charges against them under the International Crimes Act conflicted with Kenya’s laws, an argument the High Court dismissed.
