Former MP launches party, calls for interested aspirants

Former Mathare Member of Parliament Steven Kariuki has launched a new political party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

After receiving the Certificate of Registration from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), Kariuki urged aspirants interested in running for any political positions in the upcoming by-elections to register with his party, the Kenya Moja Movement Party.

“I encourage all aspirants interested in our party to register for the upcoming by-elections. Our party is prepared to field candidates for all positions in the 2027 General Elections,” Kariuki stated during a meeting with party delegates at the Boulevard Hotel.

His announcement came just hours before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) refuted claims made by some politicians suggesting that there would be no elections in 2027.

During a roundtable discussion with media stakeholders on Wednesday morning, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirmed that 24 by-elections are scheduled to take place before the year’s end, and the commission will release the election schedule within a week.

“The elections will be conducted according to the guidelines outlined in the 2010 Constitution, unless we receive alternative directives,” Ethekon stated.

The purpose of the consultative roundtable was to review the collaboration between the IEBC and the media during the 2022 General Elections, establish a working relationship, and find effective ways to communicate the commission’s activities to the public.
