Tusker FC and Harambee Stars forward Ryan Ogam has been named the LG/Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Sports Personality of the Month (SPOM) for December 2024.
The 20-year-old rising star, who is in his debut season in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF PL), has taken the league by storm, emerging as the top scorer with an impressive 15 goals to his name.
Ogam’s remarkable performance in December saw him net six goals, playing a pivotal role in propelling Tusker FC to second place in the 18-team league.
His contributions have been instrumental for the former champions, accounting for more than half of the team’s 31 goals this season.
Speaking during the award ceremony, LG’s Managing Director for East Africa, Dongwon Lee, praised Ogam’s exceptional talent and potential.
“Ryan Ogam is just starting his career, but he is already making a significant impact. This is exactly the kind of talent the SPOM award was designed to recognize, and we are proud to honor this young player today,” Lee said.
Ogam’s achievement did not come easy, as he faced stiff competition from other outstanding athletes. Among the nominees was world-class runner Beatrice Chebet, the Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, who broke the World 5km record in Barcelona on December 31, 2024.
Other contenders included Makueni Women Representative Rose Museo, who clinched the East Africa Inter-Parliamentary Games PWD darts title, and the Nairobi City Thunders basketball duo of Garang Ding and Albert Adera, who made history by guiding their team to become the first Kenyan side to qualify for the Africa Basketball League (BAL).
Also in the running were Robert Mcligeyo, the unbeaten winner of the 2024 Kenya National Chess Championship; Kenya’s national golf team captain, who triumphed in the final leg of the Kenya Golf Championship in Nyali; and Bernard Koyoko, who claimed his first Kenya Scrabble national title.
World Half Marathon champion Sebastian Sewe Kimaru, who won the Valencia Marathon on his 42km debut, and motorcross sensation Wahome Mutahi, who dominated the East and Central Africa FIM Motorcross Challenge at Vipingo Ridge, were also recognized for their outstanding performances.
Despite the fierce competition, Ogam’s consistent brilliance on the pitch earned him the coveted award, further cementing his status as one of Kenya’s most promising football talents.
As he continues to shine in his debut season, all eyes will be on the young forward to see how far he can go in his burgeoning career.
The LG/SJAK SPOM award not only celebrates Ogam’s achievements but also highlights the depth of talent across various sports in Kenya, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess on both the local and international stage.
