Fact Check: Trending Video of Priest Preaching About Thieves in Presence of Ruto Is Manipulated

A trending video featuring Father Charles Kinyua preaching about thieves in front of President William Ruto has generated mixed reactions online.

Kenyans took to social media to react to the video, with some questioning whether it is original or has been manipulated.

Did Father Kinyua preach in Ruto’s presence?

On Friday, October 11, a video surfaced claiming that Father Kinyua preached against thieves in the presence of the head of state.

The video seems to suggest that the priest is implying the president is a thief. In the footage, the focus is on Ruto, who appears to be sitting alongside a group of clergymen.

The online user who shared the video criticized the priest and demanded that action be taken against him.

“This is disrespectful to the president. You cannot tell the president that he is a thief,” the caption to the video read.

However, TUKO.co.ke confirms that the video circulating online has been edited, as the head of state was not present at the event.

The clip showing Ruto seated next to clergymen is from a previous church event attended by the head of state.

The original video shows that the sermon occurred on Thursday, October 10, during a mass service led by Father Kinyua.

What did the original video by Father Kinyua entail?

The priest addressed the congregation, centering his sermon on a 25-day novena aimed at financial wealth and prosperity.

His sermon, primarily directed at the youth, encouraged them to work hard and be generous to those in need, rather than seeking quick ways to make money.

“This verse is for the thieves especially those who are with us in this mass and the thieves who are following us online. Do we have thieves here? Ephesians 4: 28, I want to read again,” Kinyua said.

He also urged the youth not to seek quick ways to earn money, noting that wealth gained hastily tends to diminish rapidly.

“This is for the people who love betting. We thought that betting was mostly affecting our young men; unfortunately, it’s killing even men in marriages, and it’s killing even women,” he added.

Father Kinyua is the founder of the Father CK Foundation, a charitable trust registered in Kenya under the Trustee (Perpetual Succession) Act, Chapter 167 of the Laws of Kenya.

The foundation’s primary vision is to empower communities by supporting various aspects of family life.
