The Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) elections scheduled for Saturday, April 12, have been postponed due to a lack of quorum.
The Returning Officer, Sophy Kaberia, directed the organisation’s secretariat to issue a fresh notice for elections within 30 days.
The elections were a key agenda item of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which failed to proceed as planned.
“Since the law as is, and given that elections is specific agenda of the AGM, I would discourage that we continue, unless the members feel that we can continue to wait and whip up the members to attain quorum,” she said.
Members present agreed to call off the elections, deferring the vote to a later date to be determined by the Executive Council.
As of 1 pm Saturday, when voting was expected to conclude, the meeting was short by the 14 members needed to meet the two-thirds quorum requirement set by the KEG constitution.
The elections were expected to determine, among other positions, the organisation’s next president.
Two journalists—incumbent president Zubeidah Kananu (KTN) and Yvonne Okwara (Citizen TV)—were set to face off for the top seat.
Other contested positions include Council Member (Radio), with Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi in the running, and the Academia Representative post, contested by Nathan Nayere Masambu and Julius Ombui Bosire.
