‘Don’t read too much into it,’ Kahiga clears air over Ruto link

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s appearance at President William Ruto’s tour in Kieni has raised eyebrows, given his vocal criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kahiga warmly received President Ruto and his entourage, exchanging pleasantries despite his alignment with Gachagua, a Ruto ally turned foe.

“Joined H.E. President William Ruto, Deputy President H.E. Kithure Kindiki, local and national leaders during a developmental tour in Kieni East, Sub-County, Nyeri County,” Kahiga wrote on Facebook.

“My administration is committed to supporting the National Government’s projects for the benefit of the Nyeri citizenry.”

The governor also affirmed his  support for development projects initiated by the President, stating, “Today the President has brought to us development, and we want to assure him that no one should bar him from stepping in the region. We will want him to come as many times as he can.”

However, Kahiga’s newfound embrace of the President was met with skepticism, given his reputation as a staunch Gachagua ally and his rallying call of “Kama mbaya mbaya.”

In a bid to clear the air on the ensuing speculation over his role at the event, Kahiga took to Facebook to clarify his stance, insisting that his attendance should not be misinterpreted.

“I have noted frenzied interest in my attendance of the President’s functions in Kieni. Do not read too much into this photo and others shared all over. The Presidency must be respected,” Kahiga stated.

He further revealed that he would welcome the president in Nyeri Town and Othaya Constituency on Saturday, adding that his political stand remains firm despite the optics of cordial engagement.

“The Governor of Nyeri received The President of the Republic of Kenya in Nyeri, Kieni Constituency. The Governor of Nyeri will still receive The President of The Republic of Kenya on Saturday in both Nyeri Town and Othaya Constituencies. Ni lazima kutofautisha mambo!”

President Ruto’s tour of the Mt. Kenya region, covering Laikipia, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Kiambu counties, has been closely watched as he seeks to consolidate support in a region that seems to be slipping away from him.
