A High Court has freed former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu on a Sh53 million bond pending an appeal in his Sh588 million graft case, his lawyer has confirmed.

The court granted Waititu’s request for a release on bond after two unsuccessful attempts.

The former county boss was convicted in February, alongside his wife Susan Wangari, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Following his sentencing, Waititu was held at Kamiti Maximum Prison serving five months of the sentence prior to receiving today’s reprieve.

According to his legal team, Waititu is expected to deposit the money in compliance with the bond terms before walking free in months as he fights to overturn his conviction.

Waititu, his wife, businessman Charles Mbuthia Chege, Beth Wangechi, and former Kiambu Roads Chief Officer Luka Mwangi Wahinya were found guilty of defrauding the county government in a roads tender.

The tender was awarded to Testimony Enterprises Ltd in 2018 despite its link to the governor.
