Jackson Kuria Kimani, popularly known as Cop Shakur, was on Wednesday arrested at the Kahawa Law Courts, where he had appeared for a scheduled hearing.
Kuria, a former prison officer who rose to prominence during the 2024 anti-finance bill protests for his outspoken stance against government policies, was reportedly apprehended by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and taken to their headquarters in Nairobi.
A video shared earlier on Kuria’s social media platforms captured the moment of his arrest.
In the footage, he is seen addressing a plainclothes officer while inside a vehicle: “They want to arrest me. I am here at Kahawa Law Courts. The only thing I have is a Kenyan flag. Identify yourself.” The officer then presents his identification card.
After briefly inspecting the ID, Kuria asks, “I have seen it. What am I being arrested for?”
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason for his arrest.
His arrest comes hours after Patrick Osoi, a former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer, was arrested after forming a movement to fight police brutality.
According to a notice of motion filed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Osoi is accused of forming the group called Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI) alongside Cop Shakur and Kimathi Hiram, and sought to recruit current and former officers to fight ‘illegal orders.’
