Chelsea vs Newcastle: Why Christopher Nkunku’s Penalty Was Overturned

Chelsea battled to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday evening to snap their winless run of two games in the Premier League.

Nicolas Jackson continued with his fine form in front of goal, scoring his sixth goal of the season after some wonderful work by Cole Palmer.

The Blues were, however, pegged back by Alexander Isak’s finish from close range in the 32nd minute.

After the break, Palmer showcased another moment of brilliance, beating Nick Pope at his near post to restore Chelsea’s lead.

As the clock wound down, there were nervous moments for both sides. Substitute Christopher Nkunku was brought down in the area, with referee Simon Hooper giving a penalty.

Why Chelsea were denied penalty vs Newcastle

Nkunku cut inside Dan Burn, whose arm seemingly made contact with the Frenchman. VAR Jarred Gillet beckoned Hooper over, and after a pitchside review, the decision was overturned.

The Premier League has since explained why the penalty decision was rescinded.

“The referee awarded a penalty to Chelsea for a foul by Burn on Nkunku. The VAR deemed that no foul was committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision, and the play restarted with a drop ball.”
