The Council of Governors CEO, Mary Mwiti, has urged the National Treasury to release county funds on time, warning that delays are hindering operations across the country.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 5 on Spice FM, Mwiti said late disbursements have become a constant challenge, undermining the efficiency of county governments.
“I want to request that as we move forward, there have to be deliberate attempts and concern that the National Treasury releases resources to counties as prescribed in the Constitution,” she said.

Lauding Murang’a County for its progress, the CoG boss urged devolved units to scale up their own-source revenue by automating collection systems.
“Own-source revenue has been prioritised, which is why this year’s Devolution Conference is highlighting this innovation as one that should be replicated across all counties,” she said.
Addressing the upcoming Devolution Conference, that will take place on August 12–15 in Homa Bay, Mwiti said the theme- Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice, reflects growing demands from across the country.
“There was a growing call for equity, inclusion, and social justice. A collective voice was rising. The youth didn’t feel represented, the employed felt unheard, and across all sectors, people felt that their voices needed to be acknowledged.”
The four-day conference will focus on good governance, human rights, and financing equity and inclusion. The final day will be reserved for closing resolutions.
Mwiti also explained the shift to holding the conference every two years rather than annually.
“We realised one year was too short to implement the resolutions. That’s why we moved to a biennial format to ensure all commitments made during the Devolution Conference are followed through,” she said, adding that all 36 resolutions from the last conference in Uasin Gishu were implemented.
She further announced that registration for the conference has been extended to August 8 and encouraged public participation.
