Bungoma: Grief as Form One Student Dies After Unknowingly Picking up Mining Explosive

A family in the Bunmula constituency of Bungoma County is in deep mourning after their son died after accidentally picking up a mining explosive.

How did the Bungoma student die?

The high school student reportedly picked up a suspected mining explosive without realizing it on Tuesday, October 8, while walking home.

According to a report by TV47, the 16-year-old then brought the mining explosive home, where it later detonated.

“He was just in the house when I heard an explosion. I rushed inside the house and found my son hurt; his fingers were injured, and his stomach was also injured. He was hurt everywhere,” the boy’s mother said.

The family claims their son picked up the explosive device from a Chinese company involved in rock splitting in the area.

“We started looking for the source of the explosion. That’s when we found a mining explosive that killed our child. I have its remains in my house,” a relative said.

Residents of the area are blaming the company for not informing the public about the dangers of having the company in the vicinity.

“This child did not know what he picked up. If the company had fenced their premises and put up enough security, I doubt we would be in this situation today,” one resident said.
