All set for Makaveli EA football tournament as E-sports booms in Kisumu


Kisumu is set to host one of its most anticipated esports events this year — the Makaveli EA football Tournament — scheduled for Saturdayat Quinten Mall.

The event’s tournament director Derrick Makaveli, signals a major step in the commercialization and growth of esports in the lakeside city.

Themed “Inua MaYouth na Esports Mashinani,” the tournament aims to empower the youth through esports, providing a competitive platform for both amateur and pro gamers.

“Esports is no longer just a hobby — it’s a career path for many youths. We are witnessing a huge wave of talent in Kisumu, and our goal is to build structures that will commercialize gaming, create jobs, and position Kisumu as an esports hub in Kenya,” said Makaveli.

Top gamers from across the country — including Nairobi, Nakuru, Naivasha, Coast, and Kakamega — have confirmed attendance, raising the stakes for Kisumu’s local stars.

Local fan favorites like Terminator, Dulo, SeeknDestroy, George, Savage, and Jim are confident of keeping the trophy home.

Kisumu Esports representative and tournament organizer Kevin Wambua expressed his excitement:

“This is more than a tournament. It’s a platform for empowering youth and creating job opportunities through esports. With backing from Mama Selina and Rangers Esports, we are building a strong gaming ecosystem in Kisumu.”

The event boasts a prize pool of Sh30,000, with Sh15,000 for the winner, Sh10,000 for the runner-up, and Sh5,000 for third place. Players who finish 4th to 8th will receive fully branded Makaveli merchandise, including T-shirts and hoodies.
