For the first time in four years, Afraha Stadium will host a sporting event, the fourth Athletics Kenya Track and Field meet, on April 4-5, officials have confirmed.

The pitch, which used to be home to a number of FKF Premier League teams, was closed for renovation on April 30,2021.

Since then, construction has been on and off owing to availability of funds.

At some point two months ago, the delay in opening it attracted the wrath of sports stakeholders who held demonstrations demanding it should be put to use as talents were going to waste.

Yesterday, Nakuru City manager Gitau Thabaja said they are so far happy with the works at the iconic facility.

“We are happy with what has been achieved so far at the facility. But what’s left cannot stop us from using the facility on a number of occasions when need arises,” Thabaja told Standard Sports.

“We are through with the first phase of the project save for the holding wall of the stadium that should be completed in a few weeks for it to resume hosting football matches.”

By hosting the athletic event, Thabaja said it will open doors to other sporting activities.

“With that, we are open to commence hosting of other sporting activities as it were in the past,” he stated.

The venue was the home ground to Ulinzi Stars before closure, which forced the former league champions to shift base to Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards have also used it as their home ground in the past.
