Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is facing an impeachment threat after a group of lawmakers led by Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji announced plans to initiate a motion to remove him from office over remarks made following the June 25 Gen Z protests.

Mukunji accused the CS of inciting extrajudicial killings after directing police to shoot civilians approaching stations. 

“Bwana Waziri Murkomen, you don’t deserve to be the Minister of Interior if you can say people should be shot by guns meant to protect them, I’m calling on MPs to support an impeachment motion. I’m collecting numbers till Tuesday,” he said.

Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia echoed the call, stating that Murkomen has violated the Constitution’s Articles 21, 26, and 37.

The Interior CS, under fire for repeating the remarks twice within days, claims of being misquoted. 

Spice FM host Ndu Okoh challenged that denial.

 “Usually, when somebody repeats something in the same manner, they mean it. He sent a message and it wasn’t a mistake,” Okoh stated on Monday during her Breakfast show.

Legal and civic voices have joined in condemning this action. 

Former presidential aspirant Dr. Ekuru Aukot said Murkomen may have attended law school, but clearly, he does not understand the law. 

“Based on those remarks, Murkomen is an embarrassment to the legal profession,” Ekuru said.

Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, Murkomen’s former law lecturer, added: “Do you know @InteriorKE, that due to your shoot-live to murder command, you will now and in the future be held accountable for every extrajudicial extermination? How was I your teacher at UoN Law?”

As public outrage grows, more Kenyans are demanding accountability and the rule of law. Speaking on Spice FM on Monday, June 30, activist Boniface Mwangi emphasized that the people no longer care about access to the President or political brokers.

 “All everyone is asking for is justice and for the Constitution to be followed. The Constitution exists, and that is the best way to give Kenyans what they are asking for.”
