Brooklyn Park, MN—Huldah Hiltsley Momanyi is the first Kenyan American to secure a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

In a spirited race for District 38A, the Democratic candidate beat Republican Brad Olson by capturing 65% of the vote, compared to Olson’s 35%.

Huldah was born in Kenya before she moved to the US in 1994 to join her parents, who had migrated five years earlier.

Today, she stands as a symbol of hope and inclusivity for District 38A, a diverse community that has been transformed through recent redistricting and is now Democratic.

The district’s population comprises approximately 33% Black, 18% Asian, 9% Hispanic, and 38% white residents, reflecting Minnesota’s evolving demographics.

In her victory speech, Huldah, a mother of two, highlighted her mission to build a district where everyone feels at home.

“I am excited; I cannot believe it—it is history in the making. We worked so hard to get to this point,” she said, thanking her team and supporters.

She pledged to foster a community of inclusivity and empowerment, stating that there was an opportunity to build bridges and celebrate everyone’s heritage and potential.

The victory sparked celebrations among her supporters, with family and friends dancing in joy back home in Nyamemiso village, Nyamira County.

“We are celebrating our daughter’s victory,” said Stella Bonareri, as relatives in Nyamira expressed their pride during an interview with NTV.

“This girl has made us proud by putting our name on the global map,” Huldah’s uncle, Clement Momanyi, added.

Born in Nyamira County 39 years ago, Huldah earned a Master’s degree from Bethel University.

She holds three Bachelor’s degrees in international business, international relations, and reconciliation studies.

She resides in Minnesota with her husband, Bart Hiltsley, and their two children.
