The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is still ongoing, and candidates and some parents are braving different challenges before its end.
A family in Kiambu is heartbroken as they support their daughter, Terry Charity Murugi, who is sitting for her exams while on an oxygen machine.
Lucy and Paul Njiru wake up every morning to prepare their daughter, who is abled differently for school, to sit her national exams.
2024 KCSE: Kiambu Form 4 candidate gives birth during national exam
They move her oxygen machine from their home in Juja to King David Junior Secondary school situated a few kilometers away to prepare a special exam room for her since the exams began.
“They have to settle her in school every morning because they are the only ones who know how to connect the machines and then back again after exams to disconnect them before taking her back home,” Susan Wambui, a well-wisher, said.
2024 KCSE candidate put on oxygen machine
Njiru explained that his only daughter has had health problems since birth but they have been managing.
However, towards the end of 2023, her condition got worse and she was put on oxygen till now.
“She has been having on-and-off health problems and has always been on and off the hospital.

However, she got worse in 2023 while in Form 3, and the doctors told us she needed to be on oxygen to survive. So, she was admitted for three months before we got one for home,” he stated.
The parents are determined to give her the best as she is their only child.
Murugi has prepared for her papers while on the life support machine, emerging as one of the top performers in her class.
“I teach her Kiswahili and she does very well in her papers. In fact, she is one of the best-performing students in the school,” stated Rebecca Ayuma, one of her teachers.
KCSE girl delivers baby girl during English paper
In previous news by TUKO.co.ke, a Form Four candidate from Laliat Secondary School in Kericho county, welcomed a bouncing baby girl on November 4, 2024.
The teenage mother delivered her bundle of joy at the Kericho County Referral Hospital hours before starting the KCSE examination.
She was rushed to the hospital following labour pains, where she gave birth through a caesarean section.
