What caused the Makande secondary students to faint?
According to Mombasa County Chief Fire Officer Ibrahim Basafar, the eight students who were preparing to sit for the Thursday, November 7 exam fainted after inhaling an unknown gas.
Basafar said he received a distress call at around 7:15 a.m. from the area OCPD, who reported that a gas was causing students to faint at Makande Girls High School.
He said the incident temporarily disrupted students preparing to sit for their exams, as the gas leak had spread across a large part of the examination centre.
The eight students were rushed to the hospital for medical attention, while the remaining candidates in stable condition were transferred to Makande Boys High School, where they will take their exams as the situation is being controlled.

Basafar confirmed that the situation is under control, as the machine used to detect the level of the unknown gas showed that its concentration has decreased and is no longer toxic.

“We activated a team, the police were already here. We are all here to make the type of gas in the air and how we will handle it. However, the machine has detected that the gas level has gone down and is no longer poisonous or dangerous when inhaled,” Basafar told NTV.
