John Khaminwa Says 70% of Kenyans Support Gachagua, Asks Court to Block Kindiki’s Swearing-In

Nairobi—Senior Counsel John Khaminwa has urged the High Court to safeguard the job of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking before the three-judge bench on Tuesday, October 29, Khaminwa opposed the government’s application to lift orders against Kithure Kindiki’s swearing-in as the new DP.

In his argument, the veteran lawyer stated that Gachaguas enjoys a 70% poll rating in the country, and it would be unfair for the court to allow Kindiki to assume the office of the DP.

Khaminwa argued that the embattled former Mathira MP has won many sympathy votes even from people who didn’t like him before.

“Currently, the poll rating of our DP is 70% in the country. He has won a lot of sympathy votes from those who didn’t even like him. It will be devastating for this court to proceed and lift the conservatory order and bring in Kindiki as DP,” Khaminwa said.

The senior counsel added that he has no ill feelings against the outgoing Interior Cabinet Secretary and is only interested in opposing the rule of law.

“I don’t know much about Prof Kindiki, I have nothing against him, he has never wronged me and I don’t think he has ever said anything anywhere against me. All that we are interested in at the moment is to make sure that we have one country,’ he added.
