The bizarre event occurred in Funyula when one Beatrice Mbayi walked down the aisle to marry William Godfrey Mukalama, who lay lifeless in a casket.

Garments were spread out on the ground to create a path that would lead the bride-to-be from her house to the tent where the body lay.

Escorted by song and dance, Mbayi played the blushing bride as she walked meticulously towards her lifeless groom.

“We are aware it is not your wish to have a wedding ceremony in this manner, but kindly accept this ring so that you and your wife will remain one,” the man presiding over the ceremony told the groom.

The congregation ululated as the ring was slid onto the departed groom’s finger. After that, the ceremony reverted to a funeral, and the groom was buried.

Why Funyula bride married dead man

It emerged that there was a lot going on behind the scenes before the burial-turned-wedding, thanks to Mbayi’s belief in prophetess Mary Akatsa, aka “Mummy.”

Mbayi, just like other followers of the controversial religion, had taken Akatsa’s teachings about viewing death as graduation.

When William died in his Kayole home, Mbayi refused a postmortem on the body, ostensibly because mummy’s rules are against such.

TUKO.co.ke reached out to Mbayi, who was adamant that the past events, including her wedding, were behind her now, and she was forging forward.

“I exchanged rings with him because he had promised me a wedding this year, but he died before it happened,” she explained.

It is unclear whether the late husband, being a staunch Catholic, would have approved of the sort of wedding his body was subjected to.
