Mutua, who made the remarks during an interview on Citizen TV, expressed frustration with the approach some youths took when applying for recently advertised job opportunities in Qatar.

The CS recounted that thousands of applicants turned up for the interviews, yet he observed that many appeared unprepared and casually dressed.

According to him, their dress codes did not convey the professionalism or commitment necessary for employment.

Mutua was particularly critical of candidates who arrived in attire he considered inappropriate for a job interview, including hoodies, sneakers, and t-shirts with slogans.

“Even if it is a job in construction, dress like someone who can be trusted with a serious project,” Mutua stated.

He cited one slogan on the t-shirts, “Hata seng’enge ni ng’ombe,” as an example, arguing that it did not reflect a job-ready attitude.

“The first day was a big joke,” he said. “You need to look neat and presentable,” a frustrated Mutua remarked.

He reiterated that it is understood if someone is jobless and cannot afford suits, but there is the option of borrowing from neighbours or friends.

The CS’s remarks have sparked a broader conversation on social media, with some agreeing that jobseekers should dress professionally to increase their chances of success.

Others argued that attire may not always be indicative of a candidate’s abilities or work ethic, adding that some come from humble backgrounds and can’t afford good attire.

His remarks have sparked discussions about the need for more support in career readiness, interview preparation, and guidance on workplace expectations.
